in 2026, "Jazz im MIM" celebrates its 20th anniversary. We are celebrating this tonight with a three-band special.

Georg Ruby - piano solo

With "Soliloquies" (Selbstgespräche), Georg Ruby has recorded an album that on the one hand stands under the label of free improvisation and on the other appreciates the sound structures of new music as well as hints and traces of traditional jazz standards and the atmosphere of the German Schlager of the 1920s/1930s.

On the other hand, in freely improvised pieces he adds to the "loneliness of the solo improviser" that which refers to the title of the production: himself as a musical partner and source of inspiration in "soliloquy". He recorded several freely improvised tracks (including prepared piano, pebbles, rhythm on the piano strings, vocal improvisations, loops and bass lines) in advance and asked the sound designer Reinhard Kobialka to insert one, two, three or all of these tracks into the ongoing improvisation process and then remove them again without consultation, thus bringing the musician into the mode of improvisational communication with himself.

In the nets-loops-cells series, LUX:NM - one of the most versatile ensembles for contemporary music - presents itself as a purely improvising collective. Away from prefabricated scores, music is created in the moment: dense sonic networks (nets), circular movements (loops) and fine sound cells are formed in the free play of the musicians.

Known for its sonic precision, curiosity and experimental openness, LUX:NM shows a different side here - spontaneous, direct and unpredictable. The boundary between individual and ensemble becomes blurred. What remains is a living sound organism that is constantly reinventing itself.
