“Listen inwardly and give yourself time”: violinist Christian Tetzlaff approaches Dmitri Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with care. The work is a fascinating example of the composer’s late style: an intricate dialogue unfolds between orchestra and violin before uniting for an expressive, dance-like finale. Sergei Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony forms a sharp contrast to this contemplative score. Conceived as a “hymn to the free and happy human being”, it unleashes the full force of the orchestra – from its majestic opening to its driven, ecstatic finale. Paavo Järvi conducts.
