Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt konnte schon während seines Studiums bei David Geringas und Aldo Parisot bei zahlreichen Wettbewerben auf sich aufmerksam machen: So verlieh ihm beim Internationalen Rostropovitch-Wettbewerb die Jury unter dem Vorsitz von Mstislav Rostropovitch den Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris und zusätzlich den Preis für zeitgenössische Musik.
