As the Advent season reaches its climax, people from all over the world gather year after year beneath the cathedral’s massive dome—united by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, which ushers them into the holiday season together. The work is breathtakingly diverse: lively choral movements give way to heartfelt arias, the delicate breath of the flutes yields to the jubilant brilliance of the trumpets, and between contemplative chorales and dreamlike string music, the heavens seem to open for a moment.
