"East West East": Wegner opens exhibition in subway stations

  • Exhibition "East West East - Berlin post-war modernism"

The subway station is all about the architectural heritage of the post-war period.

  • Exhibition "East West East - Berlin post-war modernism"

Head of government Kai Wegner (CDU) opened the new exhibition.

A new exhibition in Berlin subway stations provides information about the architectural history of Karl-Marx-Allee.

The show deals with the architectural heritage of the post-war period, as announced by the State Monuments Office. The entrances to the Schillingstraße and Weberwiese subway stations are designed in this way.

Exhibition "East West East" on Karl-Marx-Allee

The exhibition, which bears the name "Ost West Ost - Berliner Nachkriegsmoderne" in German, sheds light on the architecture and living environments in the Karl-Marx-Allee area. It takes a comparative look at the Hansaviertel and post-war modernism elsewhere. In Berlin, the history of the 20th century, with all its fractures and contradictions, is more concentrated than in almost any other place, announced the Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) at the opening.

Wegner: Architecture still impresses today

"Karl-Marx-Allee is a prime example of this: once the GDR's boulevard - and at the same time a reminder of the lack of freedom behind the facades of socialism. The architecture is still impressive today." The exhibition helps to understand the history. Especially because many younger people no longer experienced the division of Berlin, it is important to keep the memory alive.
