Construction work on the new Ringbahn bridge begins today (October 20, 2025). The new replacement structure is due to be completed by summer 2027. The project company Deges is responsible.

The Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) is expected to attend the official start of construction (12:30 p.m.). The construction work that is now beginning will lead to further restrictions for motorists and freight traffic.

Heavily used traffic junction

The old Ringbahn bridge was part of the Funkturm highway triangle, one of the most heavily used traffic junctions in Germany. In March of this year, the bridge was closed because a crack had unexpectedly developed in the supporting structure. Shortly afterwards, the overpass over the S-Bahn tracks was demolished. The same happened to the Westendbrücke, which is located a little further north. Since then, motorists in the west of Berlin have had to accept extensive detours. The detour traffic through residential areas puts a strain on local residents.

First closures from the end of October

The project company Deges has already announced extensive closures at the Funkturm interchange from October 30 at 10 p.m. until November 3 at 5 a.m. The reason is the demolition of the highway bridge over Halenseestraße Ost, which is currently closed to traffic, as part of the construction of the new Ringbahn bridge. "Another new bridge is also being built there," said Bernd Rothe, head of the A100 task force at Deges, to RBB-Inforadio. Trucks from the A100 coming from the east will be diverted towards Spandauer Damm at the Schmargendorf junction, while trucks coming from the north on the A111 will be diverted via Königin-Elisabeth-Straße towards the Funkturm interchange at Spandauer Damm. The last weekend of the fall holidays was chosen in order to synchronize it with closures in the railroad area and to be finished before Christmas. At the same time, the detour route will be renovated.
