Camera vehicles on the road in Berlin

City map

Berlin's road network will be remeasured and documented in the coming months.

Special vehicles drive through the streets with cameras and laser scanners: They produce 360-degree panoramic images and digital 3D models of the public road space and its surroundings, according to the traffic administration.

Existing data is outdated

The so-called geodata obtained in this way should help, among other things, to facilitate the work of road construction and road traffic authorities and to plan and implement construction measures more quickly. Individual measurements on site could be eliminated and costs saved, according to the traffic administration. The existing geodata is largely outdated.

Geodata is made available

It was reported that strict data protection regulations apply when scanning the roads. "Personal data such as faces and vehicle license plates are already anonymized during data processing," explained the Senate Transport Administration. In addition, everything is organized in such a way that there are no restrictions on road traffic. In order to increase transparency for citizens, the newly acquired geodata will also be freely accessible as Open Data via the Geoportal Berlin, it was also announced.
