The clearance of explosive ordnance on the tarmac of the former Tegel Airport has been completed much earlier than planned.
Originally, around a year and a half more time was planned for this, according to the state-owned company Grün Berlin. Around seven tonnes of explosive remnants of war, mainly from the Second World War, were recovered from the approximately 152-hectare site.
A team of experts accompanied the work with the help of minimally invasive soundings in order to minimise interference with the habitats of animals and plants. A 190-hectare landscape park is planned for the former Tegel Airport, with work due to begin in 2028 and be completed by 2030. The plans will be finalised by then, it is said. The neighbouring Tegeler Stadtheide, which also includes parts of the former runway, is already open to visitors as part of guided tours, workshops and events.
