Tenants in Berlin can now have their rent checked free of charge to see if they are paying too much rent. Telephone advice is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9 a.m. and 12 noon and on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., according to the Senate Department for Building and Housing. Appointments can be made by calling +49 (0)30 213 007 302.
Personal advice is also offered on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons at the offices of Mieterberatung Prenzlauer Berg and Asum GmbH in Friedrichshain. The rent review office is located at Siwo (Sicheres Wohnen - Beteiligung, Beratung, Prüfung). The advisors provide support in checking the rent level and advise on further steps to pursue rights in the event of excessive rent.
Interested parties should check online in advance whether there could be a case of usurious rents or whether the landlord may not be complying with the rent cap. This is possible via the Berlin rent index query service. This provides information on the level of local rents.
