The Berlin police and the Senate want to further intensify and expand speed checks on the roads.
It is important to maintain and increase the control pressure, said Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) at the presentation of the road traffic accident report.
There are currently 47 fixed speed cameras, 23 of which are only for speeding and 24 of which also take pictures of drivers running red lights. The police also have 21 cars for speed checks and 6 mobile speed cameras that are parked on the road. "I would like to have even more mobile systems," emphasized Spranger. The fines office will also be given 32 additional staff positions on top of the 303 already in place to process the fines.
The number of traffic accidents fell slightly in 2024 to 133,365 (2023: 134,136) despite the growing city. There were 14,505 slightly injured people, slightly more than in the previous year (2023: 14,139). The number of serious injuries fell significantly to 1,920 (2023: 2,073). As has been known for some time, the number of fatalities was 55 (2023: 33). This figure fluctuates greatly every year and says less about general road safety.
