Senator announces better working conditions in daycare centres

Kita

Berlin's Senator for Education, Katharina Günther-Wünsch, has indicated an improvement in working conditions for daycare centre employees. A change in the staffing ratio should bring noticeable relief for childcare workers within a year, the CDU politician explained at a meeting of the Round Table for Daycare Centres.

This means that, in mathematical terms, one specialist should look after one child less than before, meaning that groups will become smaller. According to the senator, this will also benefit the quality of early childhood education. In addition, two fixed closing days per year are planned for further training. According to Günther-Wünsch, this allows daycare centre employees to receive further training and education without this being at the expense of daily care.

Günther-Wünsch: Investment in the future is worthwhile

"These measures will help to retain skilled workers in the system in the long term," she said. "Particularly in view of the shortage of skilled workers, it is crucial that we support skilled workers and offer them better working conditions." According to the senator, the planned changes will involve considerable financial resources. "But I am convinced that this investment in the future is worth it - for the daycare centres, the professionals and for the children in Berlin."

Constructive-critical exchange at the round table

The Round Table for Daycare Centres was established in November 2024 to bring all stakeholders together on a regular basis and look for solutions to improve working conditions in Berlin's daycare centres. According to the latest figures, around 170,000 children are looked after in around 2,900 daycare centres in Berlin.
