Street trees rely on the help of Berliners during this dry summer. The Senate Department for Climate Action and the Environment is calling on citizens to water the trees. "Grab a bucket and water your tree. It will thank you for it," emphasized Senator Ute Bonde (CDU).

According to the report, dry and hot periods are particularly stressful for trees in the city because the soil is compacted, surfaces are sealed and there is virtually no natural water cycle. Young trees do not yet have roots that reach deep enough to access water reserves, the report stated. According to the information provided, older trees are often still weakened by past periods of drought.

Water street trees in the morning or evening

How do you water street trees properly? The Senate Administration explains: It’s best to water the tree slowly and close to the trunk. In the morning or evening, the water can seep deep into the soil and evaporates less - so it’s best to water at these times of day.
