Due to construction work, ships will soon no longer be able to pass under the Mühlendammbrücke in Berlin-Mitte for just over two months. The closure of the waterway will begin on January 20 and is expected to end on March 31, according to the traffic administration.
The Mühlendammbrücke, built in 1968, is one of Berlin's most important bridges and is currently being rebuilt. It is to become almost seven meters narrower. The demolition is due to be completed in 2028. The bridge leads from Molkenmarkt to Fischerinsel over the Spree. According to the administration, it was previously used by up to 74,000 cars and trucks every day.
In recent weeks, the road surfaces and kerbs, the bridge drainage system and the pipelines of the media carriers have been dismantled. For motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, traffic routing over the bridge remains in place.
