In view of the high number of traffic fatalities in Berlin, Transport Senator Ute Bonde has announced a series of measures to improve road safety.

"The road accident statistics are appalling," admitted the CDU politician in the Transport Committee. Last year, 55 people died on the roads across Berlin. "That was one of the highest figures in recent years."

"Road safety program 2030" planned

The Senate remains committed to Vision Zero, the goal of ideally reducing the number of road deaths to zero, said Bonde. To this end, a "Road Safety Program 2030" is to be launched, which she intends to present in the first half of 2025. One part of this is a program of measures to improve safety on school routes, among other things. This also includes adapting the Berlin Cycling Plan with a view to road safety and an immediate program for greater safety for pedestrians crossing roads.

24 pedestrians and eleven cyclists died in 2024

According to police data, 24 pedestrians and eleven cyclists alone were among the 55 road deaths. The total number of fatal accidents was significantly higher than in 2023 with only 33. In previous years, however, the number fluctuated between 34 and 56.
