Wegner on Christmas: "Family, friends, solidarity and hope"

Berlins Regierender Bürgermeister Wegner

Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner

Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner has wished Berliners a Merry Christmas, but also reminded them of the attack in Magdeburg.

"A year full of challenges lies behind us. I don't know about you, but I have been longing for Christmas," said the CDU politician. "For a time that gives us pause and reminds us of what unites us: Family, friends, solidarity, and hope."

Berlin faces challenges

"But it is precisely during this time of reflection that we also realise how turbulent and challenging the world around us is," explained Wegner. "We are full of grief for the victims of the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg, we are experiencing wars and crises, insecurities and divisions in our society." There are also great challenges in Berlin, but equally great opportunities. "Let's work together to make Berlin function a little better every day," said the Governing Mayor.

Creating hope and opportunities

"Today, I would especially like to thank the people who also work during the festive season: the police, the firefighters, the carers, the doctors, the employees of Berlin's public transport companies - all those who look after their fellow human beings and keep Berlin running." Christmas is the festival of love, hope and confidence, said Wegner. "But I also know that many people have worries. Let's not leave them alone. Let's find ways together to create hope and opportunities."

"Start confidently into a healthy and successful new year"

He wished all Berliners a peaceful and relaxing Christmas. "Enjoy the peace and quiet - and above all the time with your family and loved ones, recharge your batteries and start a healthy and successful new year with confidence."
