The Berlin economy is proving to be robust, contrary to the national trend.
Adjusted for prices, the capital's gross domestic product (GDP) rose by around 1.6 per cent last year, according to the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistical Office on Thursday.
This was the third strongest growth compared to the 15 other federal states. Only in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg did economic output increase even more. Excluding inflation, the economy in Berlin grew by around eight per cent. Nationwide, however, GDP fell by 0.3 per cent last year. According to the statisticians, the Berlin economy has therefore outperformed the national economy in each of the past ten years. The main driver of growth is the capital's strong service sector. Price-adjusted value added in this sector increased by around two per cent last year compared to 2022.
