The "Siemensstadt Square" industrial and residential construction project in Spandau is making progress.
The Senate approved the draft development plan for part of the area on Tuesday, which still has to be approved by the House of Representatives, as explained by Christian Gaebler (SPD), Senator for Urban Development, after the Senate meeting. Once the development plan for the area with the eastern entrance is in place, the first phase of the new urban quarter can begin. Construction is due to start in May.
The 76-hectare "Siemensstadt Square" district is to be built on the traditional industrial site of Siemens AG in the west of Berlin by 2035. Production facilities are to be concentrated in two so-called industrial hubs on the site in the Spandau district of Siemensstadt. In addition, around 2,700 apartments are to be built by 2035, at least 30 percent of which will be rent-controlled. Gaebler said that the development plan would create the legal planning conditions for Siemens AG as the developer to build an open urban quarter for living, working and living. These are good prospects for the production site, which has been characterized by industry for over 100 years.
