A good 8,700 teachers previously employed in Berlin have applied for tenure since the end of February.
This is slightly more than half of the 16,000 teachers for whom this option is now possible, as Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU) announced on Tuesday.
Berlin reintroduced the tenure of teachers after an 18-year hiatus in order to make the profession more attractive and to counteract the shortage of teachers in schools. At the end of February, a package of laws came into force. The senator assessed the figure as positive. "At the same time, however, it is only half. This shows that there is obviously still a need for more precision in the implementation of the plan.
