Months-long closures on Berlin Stadtbahn

The section near the Gendarmenmarkt that has been closed since the end of January in favour of a pedestrian zone will be reopened to motorised traffic on 1 July, as the traffic administration announced on Tuesday. The background to the decision was objections by residents against the 500-metre pedestrian zone between Leipziger Strasse and Französischer Strasse, some of which were connected with summary proceedings in court. A moratorium was to be offered to the complainants. A broad participation process for an overall urban development and traffic concept for the historic centre would then begin in autumn.
