Law on the reappointment of district offices has been passed

The reappointment of Berlin district offices (Bürgerärmter) after the repeat election will be regulated by law.

The law provides for mayors and city councilors to be re-elected by the district assemblies if the majority ratios in the parliaments have changed during the election re-run on February 12.

Benefits will continue to be paid until end of legislative period

The law also stipulates that mayors and city councilors who leave office will continue to be paid until the end of the legislative period in 2026 and will receive their full salaries. At the session of the House of Representatives on March 23, the CDU, SPD, the Green Party and the Left Party voted in favor of the legal regulation, while the AfD voted against it.

Appointment of several parties to district offices

In each of Berlin's twelve districts, one mayor and five city councilors form the district office. Several parties are involved in the appointment process, not only those that form a coalition in the district parliament. The members of the district office are proposed by the parliamentary groups in the respective parliaments.
