Preliminary budget result: Berlin is better off than expected

Berlin came through the past year financially better than expected.

Despite difficult conditions, the state can do without additional debt, as Berlin's Senator for Finance Daniel Wesener announced on Tuesday on the topic of the preliminary annual financial statements. According to Wesener, last year's revenues of 37.379 billion euros were around 2.2 billion euros higher than originally budgeted. Expenditures, at 36.629 billion, were nearly 790 million euros below plan. "Once again, Berlin's state budget has proven robust, even in the energy crisis caused by the Ukraine war," the finance senator said.

No debt despite relief package

Despite the state's energy crisis relief package for private households and corporations, no debt had become necessary. Wesener said, however, that caution remains necessary in terms of fiscal policy. The Green Party politician warned of the consequences of persistently high inflation, rising interest rates on loans and the difficult economic situation. Wesener had presented the preliminary financial statements in the Senate on Tuesday.
