Commission clears hurdle for 700 flats in Lichtenberg

Wohnungen entstehen auf einer Baustelle

In Lichtenberg, 700 mainly state-owned new flats are to be built in the coming years.

An important hurdle has now been cleared by the Senate Commission on Housing, the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing announced on Tuesday. The committee has found a solution for building a primary school on the site despite the limited space available. With the commission's decision, the planning procedure can now "be continued without delay", it said.

Development plan to be decided in early 2024

"We are fortunate to still have state-owned land that allows housing construction on this scale," said Andreas Geisel (SPD), Senator for Building. However, it will be several years before construction can begin. The development plan for the Lichtenberg site is to be approved at the beginning of 2024.
