In Berlin, more than 4,100 children and young people who have fled Ukraine already attend school.

In particular, the offer of welcome classes has recently been greatly expanded, as the Senate Department for Education announced on Friday. The number of new welcome classes offered has risen from 99 to 140 in the past week alone.

«Great efforts on the part of all those involved»

Currently, 2431 children and young people from Ukraine attend a welcome class in Berlin. In addition, there are almost 1700 pupils in regular classes. "This helpful development has only become possible thanks to great efforts on the part of all those involved," said Senator for Education Astrid-Sabine Busse (SPD). The education administration had already developed the concept of the welcome class several years ago, after numerous refugees arrived in Berlin in 2015, especially from Syria.
