Since the beginning of the year, dog owners in Berlin have had to register their four-legged friends in the dog register. The transitional period for compulsory registration expires at the end of June.
The transitional period applies to all dog owners who already kept their dog before 01 January 2022. In these cases, the entry in the register must be made by 01 July 2022. Failure to register a dog is considered an administrative offence and may result in a fine.
The compulsory registration of dogs, which has been in force since the beginning of the year, will make it easier to identify dogs and find their owners. Furthermore, statistical evaluations on the dangerousness of certain breeds or crossbreeds should be possible. Registration in the dog register is subject to a fee: online registration costs 17.50 euros, registration by telephone or in writing 26.50 euros.
