Since the start of the early shift on Tuesday morning (March 22, 2022), security staff at the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport BER are on a one-day warning strike.
Air traffic at BER Airport is very limited, Verdi union secretary Helge Biering said. Some 210 security guards had reportedly gathered in the airport building and on Willy Brand Square in front of it after the strike began at 4 AM Tuesday morning. Of the more than 30 check-in lines, only two were operating, he said. Around 8 AM, the union plans a protest inside the airport terminal, followed by a rally.
Verdi had also called for strike of security staff at the airports Frankfurt, Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn. In the ongoing wage negotiations with the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies, Verdi is demanding, among other things, that the hourly wage for aviation security services be increased by at least one euro per hour and that wages be aligned regionally. Four rounds of negotiations failed to produce a result. The employers had accused the union of excessive demands.
