Berlin showed solidarity with Ukraine on Wednesday by illuminating the Brandenburg Gate in the Ukrainian national colors. On Thursday evening (Feb. 24, 2022), the famous landmark will be illuminated as a sign of solidarity once again.
The illumination is planned from 6.45 PM until midnight. "We are sending a clear message by illuminating the Brandenburg Gate," Berlin's Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) declared. "A free city for a free and sovereign Ukraine."
"We are showing solidarity with the people in Ukraine, the many Berliners with Ukrainian roots, but also with the many Russians who wish for peace in Russia and in Ukraine," Giffey said. On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine and ordered a deployment of Russian soldiers.
