S-Bahn extensions to Spandau and Teltow enter pre-planning phase

S-Bahn

The planned extension of the S-Bahn lines on the outskirts of Berlin is entering a new phase.

Extensions are part of the Berlin-Brandenburg rail expansion project "i2030"

Thus, the planning process for the new section of the S25 from Teltow to Stahnsdorf is to be intensified, as the Transport Association Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB)announced on Friday (January 14, 2022). A financing agreement has been finalized for this purpose as well as for the preliminary planning for an S-Bahn extension to the Falkenhagener Feld in Spandau. Both sections are projects of the Berlin-Brandenburg i2030 rail expansion program, which aims to improve railway connections between Berlin and its surrounding area so that more people can travel by train instead of by car.

10-minute intervals planned between Stahnsdorf and Berlin city center

According to the VBB, the state of Brandenburg offers a budget of six million euros for the preliminary planning of the S25 extension to Stahnsdorf. Berlin is giving four million to pre-plan the double-track extension of the S-Bahn line in Lankwitz between the stations Südende and Lichterfelde Ost. This extension should enable trains to run in a 10-minute interval between Stahnsdorf and central Berlin. New stations will be built at Iserstraße and Sputendorfer Straße in Teltow. Those responsible are aiming for the line to be in operation in 2032.

Extension of Bötzowbahn to provide S-Bahn connection to Falkenhagener Feld

"The i2030 project aims to further expand and strengthen environmentally friendly railway transport in the coming years," said VBB Managing Director Susanne Henckel. This, she added, would promote more climate-friendly transportation policies. The Berlin Senate and Havelländische Eisenbahngesellschaft signed a financing agreement for the planned extension of the S-Bahn to Falkenhagener Feld. The aim is to use the railway line of the so-called Bötzowbahn as a connection from Spandau station to Falkenseer Chaussee.

Extension to Falkensee and Finkenkrug

The expansion program also includes an extension of the S-Bahn line along the Hamburger Bahn to Falkensee and Finkenkrug. Both plans are to be coordinated with each other. Two new stations on the Bötzowbahn line have also been announced: Seegefelder Strasse and Falkenhagener Feld. The possibility of a later extension of the S-Bahn from Falkenseer Chaussee to Johannesstift is currently being explored.
