Renewed extension of the standard period of study in Berlin

In light of of the pandemic, the standard period of study at Berlin universities will once again be extended for the winter semester 2021/22.

Standard period of study extended by one semester

This was announced by the Senate Department for Higher Education and Research, Health, Long-Term Care and Gender Equality on Thursday (Jan. 13, 2022). For students who were enrolled at a Berlin university for the winter semester, the standard period of study will be extended by one semester due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The standard period of study was extended for the first time in the summer semester of 2020/21, also due to the pandemic.

Longer maximum funding period for BAföG recipients

The extension of the standard period of study is particularly relevant for BAföG recipients, who will not lose their funding if their studies take longer because of the pandemic. The BAföG education advancement grant is only paid within the framework of the standard period of study. With the extension of the latter, the maximum duration of financial support is also increased accordingly.
