Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner views the anniversary of German reunification as a day of celebration. “Thirty-six years of German reunification are a cause for celebration and, at the same time, our mission to strengthen cohesion in our country,” the CDU politician explained. “As a formerly divided city and as the German capital, Berlin has a special responsibility here,” Wegner said. “Our diversity in Germany is our strength.”

In 1989, courageous men and women in the GDR took to the streets to demand freedom and democracy, bringing down the SED regime and the Berlin Wall. “Today we celebrate German reunification and thank all those who are committed to democracy, freedom, and social cohesion.”

Berlin Presents Itself in Bremen as a City of Innovation

On Saturday, Wegner will take part in the main celebrations for German Unity Day in Bremen, which are being held under the theme “Many Strengths. One Country.” Berlin will be showcasing itself as a city of innovation at a “States Mile” event. Visitors can, for example, experience space exploration with the Tacheles satellite and a mobile moon rover. Another theme is the use of artificial intelligence.
