When it was first built, the Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf was considered revolutionary in the field of social housing.

Because of its colorful facades, the neighborhood is also called the "Parrot Neighborhood."

The Berlin Senate is pleased that the Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf, located in the southwestern part of the city, has been added to the Unesco World Heritage List.

"We are very pleased," said Christian Gaebler (SPD), Senator for Urban Development. The Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf, designed by architect Bruno Taut, represents a new beginning in urban planning. "Its uniqueness is a symbol of modernity that has been demonstrating for nearly 100 years how affordable housing can be combined with a high quality of life."

Waldsiedlung: Part of the "Berlin Modernism Housing Estates"

With its decision, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee not only recognized the quality of the housing estate but also brought a historic idea into the present. Earlier, during its session in Busan, South Korea, the committee had decided that the housing estate, built in the Bauhaus style between 1926 and 1932, would now be included on the Unesco World Heritage List. However, this is not a new entry on the World Heritage List, but rather an expansion of the “Berlin Modernism Housing Estates” site, which was already recognized in 2008. This now includes a total of seven housing estates, among them the well-known Hufeisensiedlung in the Neukölln district and the Weiße Siedlung in Reinickendorf. There are a total of 55 World Heritage sites in Germany.
