The Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf around the Onkel Toms Hütte subway station is a Bauhaus-style housing estate in the southwest of Berlin.

Papageiensiedlung (Parrot Estate) - this is the name by which most Berliners know the Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf (Zehlendorf Forest Estate). Anyone who has ever been there will immediately recognize the name: all the houses on the estate are brightly painted. The housing estate in the southwest of Berlin is also known as Onkel Toms Hütte (Uncle Tom's Cabin).

Living in the style of modernity

The Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf is another estate designed by architect Bruno Taut. He planned the estate together with the architects Hugo Häring and Otto Rudolf Salvisberg. The houses around the Onkel Toms Hütte (Uncle Tom's Cabin) subway station were built between 1926 and 1932 in the Bauhaus style. 1,100 apartment buildings with up to three storeys and detached houses of two types were built.

Emergence of the "Parrot Estate"

An important design element of the architect Bruno Taut was color. All the facades of the estate were painted in bright colors: The eastern façades were painted in shades of yellow and green, while the façades facing west were painted brown and burgundy. The colorfulness earned the estate the initially derisive name "Parrot Estate". In the meantime, nothing has remained of the mockery. Not only the residents appreciate their apartments and houses; people interested in architecture come from all over the world to see the estate. In 1995, the Waldsiedlung Zehlendorf was placed under a preservation order.
