21 parties submit candidate lists for Berlin election

Significantly fewer parties plan to run their own slates in the Berlin House of Representatives election on September 20 than did three years ago.

According to the State Election Office, 21 parties submitted state or district slates by the deadline at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. In the 2021 election, 34 parties ran with state or district lists. The documents submitted for this election will now be reviewed by the State Election Office or the district election offices. This also applies to the signatures of supporters that parties not represented in the House of Representatives or the Bundestag were required to submit additionally.

Decisions on candidate nominations must be made by July 24

The district election committees will then decide on July 22, and the state election committee on July 24, whether to approve the submitted candidate lists. Using state and district lists, the parties compete for second votes, which determine the distribution of seats in the House of Representatives. In Berlin, the parties themselves determine whether they will run in the election with a single state-wide list or with district-level lists. The SPD and CDU have district lists, while Die Linke, the Greens and the AfD have state-wide lists.
