It will become easier for employees of the State of Berlin to find an apartment in the capital. To this end, there are plans to build approximately 3,000 new employee apartments by 2031 on behalf of the Senate. The CDU-SPD Senate has passed a resolution to that effect, as Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) announced after the meeting.

The employee housing program, which was launched in 2024, is thus set to be expanded. The plan is to have the new apartments built by state-owned housing companies. To this end, additional state-owned land will be systematically assessed for suitability.

Housing as the Key to Recruiting Employees

The program is driven by the close link between the housing shortage and the labor shortage in the State of Berlin: According to current projections, approximately 40,000 employees will leave state service by the end of 2031, making it necessary to hire new staff on a corresponding scale. The chronic housing shortage acts as a deterrent to potential applicants. According to the Interior Administration, securing housing for young professionals and state employees is therefore a key tool for recruiting staff. It is indispensable for the long-term functioning of the public service.
