Berlin plans to strengthen civil defense

Press conference of the Berlin Senate

Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) and Senator for the Interior Iris Spranger (SPD) see a need for action regarding civil defense.

The Senate believes that Berlin must invest more in civil defense. This was announced by Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) following the most recent Senate meeting at the Federal Ministry of Defense.

The Senate has agreed on a series of measures aimed at strengthening civil defense structures. This includes appointing civil defense coordinators in every Senate department, Wegner said. In addition, there will be more civil defense and disaster response drills in the future. The goal is to make Berlin crisis-resilient and improve the protection of the population, according to the CDU politician.

Discussions with Federal Minister of Defense and representatives of Bundeswehr

Speaking at the Senate meeting at the Federal Ministry of Defense, Wegner noted that Berlin was the first state to hold a session there. The Senate discussed the current global situation with Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius (SPD). Among other topics, they discussed issues such as providing for the population in the event of a crisis with him and generals from the Bundeswehr.

The capital's resilience to be strengthened

Wegner pointed out that Berlin is not a federal state like any other, but also the federal capital. “That is why the threat situation here is unique.” Berlin must, as a whole, adapt to a wide variety of future threats and prepare for them as best as possible.
