Dead fish in waterways - authorities ask Berliners for help

Anyone who discovers dead fish on the surface of the water in Berlin in the coming days should report this to the fisheries office at the request of the environmental administration.

"The process is regrettable and not a pretty sight, but it is a natural process," according to the administration.

Oxygen deficiency due to frozen surfaces

Due to the harsh winter, the surfaces of lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water in the capital were frozen for days. In smaller bodies of water in particular, this can lead to oxygen depletion and the death of fish. "Preventive measures are only possible to a limited extent and can also cause additional harm to fish in hibernation." 

Water bodies and fish stocks usually recover quickly

With rising temperatures, the ice is now melting and the dead fish are being pushed to the surface. Reports to the Fisheries Office ensure that the animals are collected. The administration explains that water bodies and fish stocks recover relatively quickly after weather-related oxygen depletion. Depending on how many fish have died, new fish of naturally occurring species may also be released into the water later.
