New strategy for improved quality of education

Berlin schoolchildren are to improve their German and maths skills. Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU) is focusing on a new "strategy to improve the quality of education" to achieve this.

This includes, among other things, the systematic expansion of proven support and teaching concepts and greater cooperation between daycare centres, schools, families, youth welfare services and other partners.

Improve language and maths skills

In addition, pupils' learning progress is to be regularly recorded and evaluated using standardised procedures. On this basis, support needs can be better identified and programmes designed in a more targeted manner, as Günther-Wünsch explained. The aim is to continuously increase the proportion of Berlin pupils who achieve the national minimum standards in language and mathematics.

Paradigm shift in education policy

"With this quality strategy, we are undergoing a paradigm shift: we are moving away from isolated individual measures and, for the first time, placing quality development in daycare centres and schools on a common, reliable and data-based foundation," explained the senator. "We are focusing on what children actually learn and consistently making adjustments when goals are not achieved."
