The Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection features outstanding works by the Surrealists and their precursors.

Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection

The Scharf-Gerstenberg art museum features a wide range of primarily surrealist artists. The collection spans from Piranesi, Goya and Redon to Dalí, Magritte, Max Ernst and Dubuffet.

History of Fantastic Art

The collection of the "Dieter Scharf Foundation in Memory of Otto Gerstenberg" offers a comprehensive overview of the Surrealist art movement. The works on display span over 250 years of art history, including the precursors and successors of Surrealism. In the permanent exhibition "Surreal Worlds," visitors encounter works by the movement’s leading figures, such as Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí and Hans Bellmer. In addition, they can explore the earliest traces of emerging Surrealism through the works of artists such as Francisco de Goya and Odilon Redon.

Movies at the Scharf-Gerstenberg Museum

The range of art on display is expanded by a film program in the Sahurê Hall, which includes classic surrealist films by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí as well as films by contemporary artists that reference surrealism or employ its formal techniques.

Highlights of the Collection

Highlights of the collection include, among others, Salvador Dalí's "Étude pour'„Banlieue de la ville paranoïaque-critique'" (1935), Man Ray's "Erotique voilée" (1933) , Max Ernst's "Le Triomphe de l'amour/fausse allégorie" (1937), Hans Bellmer's "La poupée" (1936/1938) and "La mystère est exempt de pudeur" (1935) by Georges Hugnet.
