Visitors to the Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum can take an evening stroll in the light of historic gas lanterns. As it is part of the Tiergarten, it can be visited free of charge and at any time.
The Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum Berlin (Gas Lantern Open-Air Museum Berlin) was set up back in 1978 to save the gas lantern from oblivion. At that time there were still 31, in the meantime there were even 90 different historical gas lanterns in the collection. The lanterns can be found on Straße des 17. Juni, in front of the Berlin Pavilion and on Parkweg in Tiergarten up to Schleusenbrücke. As dusk falls, they are illuminated and bathe the paths in a warm, yellow light.
Overview boards provide visitors with information on the year of construction and origin of the lanterns, which come from 25 German and 11 other European cities. The oldest gas lantern in Berlin can be found directly in front of the Berlin Pavilion in Tiergarten. It dates back to 1826.
Only a few gas lanterns are now still in operation. Many of the museum pieces are in need of repair due to vandalism and their age. An association is trying to keep the open-air museum running. The German Museum of Technology has stored some of the lights in order to refurbish them.
