GDR Museumswohnung WBS 70

Museumswohnung Hellersdorf

An original GDR living room in a typical prefabricated apartment.

The museum apartment in Hellersdorf is the last remaining original "Plattenbau" from the GDR in Berlin.

The museum is one of 42,000 apartments of the Plattenbau (large-panel-system building) type WBS 70 that were built in Hellersdorf using the prefabricated construction method. It only took 18 hours to build an apartment of this type. Today, the museum apartment invites you on a genuine journey into the past. Every item of furniture and the structural elements are original from the GDR. Visitors are completely immersed in the living culture of the German Democratic Republic.

Authentic GDR flair

From the television to the radiators and lamps to the salt shaker and wall unit: the museum apartment is pure GDR. Tenants of Stadt und Land GmbH, which owns the museum apartment, participated in furnishing the rooms with their own furniture, appliances, pictures, books and more. The furnishings, as they can be seen today, cost over 9,700 marks in 1989. The average monthly income at the time was 969 marks.
