The Museum of Islamic Art, located within the Pergamon Museum, displays art from Islamic peoples ranging from the Near East through Egypt to Iran, dating from the 8th to the 19th century.

Renovation work at the Pergamon Museum: Closed through 2027

As part of the major renovation of the Pergamon Museum, the Museum of Islamic Art will be completely closed to visitors until 2027. In the spring of 2027, the first sections - such as the hall housing the Pergamon Altar - are scheduled to reopen. The Asisi Panorama will remain open.

The Department of Islamic Art was founded in 1904 by Wilhelm von Bode. It initially comprised the facade of the Mshatta Desert Castle - still a highlight of the collection today - as well as carpets from Wilhelm von Bode’s collection. Together with the Islamic decorative arts from Friedrich Sarres's collection, this formed the basis of the Berlin collection. It is one of the oldest collections of its kind in the world and houses a vast specialized library on Islamic art and archaeology.

A journey through Islamic history

Today, the Museum of Islamic Art (German: Museum für Islamische Kunst) features Islamic art from the 8th to the 19th century in its permanent exhibition. The exhibition focuses on the Near East - including Egypt and Iran - extending as far as India. The collection is arranged chronologically and guides visitors through the various dynasties, where they can admire artistically decorated Qur'ans, carpets, facades and carvings. The collection spans all periods of Islamic history from the 7th to the 19th century, as well as ancient South Arabian and ancient Persian artifacts. Particular highlights include the carpet collection, the intricately carved dome from the Alhambra and the magnificent Aleppo Room with its elaborate inlays and wall paneling.
