Allied Museum Berlin: View of the Outpost Theater

The Allied Museum is located in the middle of the former US sector. The history of the Western Allies in Berlin after the Second World War is covered in the permanent exhibition.

The permanent exhibition "How enemies became friends" at the Allied Museum (Alliierten-Museum) documents the collaboration, cooperation and difficulties between the three Western powers during their almost 50-year presence in Berlin. Numerous original objects tell of the first years of occupation, the Soviet blockade, the Cold War in Berlin and finally German reunification - all from the perspective of the Allies. They left behind a wealth of material evidence, which the museum is tasked with preserving and researching.

Berlin under the four-power status

After the end of the Second World War, in 1945, Berlin was placed under the joint control of the four victorious powers - England, France, the United States of America and Russia. Accordingly, the city was divided into four occupation zones. Tensions developed between the three Western powers and Russia in the course of the Cold War, leading to the Soviet blockade and the famous airlift in Berlin. The four-power status ceased to apply in October 1990. The Allies withdrew from Berlin in 1991.

Exhibition at the Allied Museum: Highlights

A particular highlight of the exhibition is the Hastings TG 503, a British transport plane from the time of the airlift. The restored Berlin spy tunnel, which was built by the American and British secret services from 1953, is also a highlight. The aim of building the tunnel was to intercept Soviet telecommunications lines. A popular exhibit is the original façade of the first guardhouse at Checkpoint Charlie. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum regularly shows special exhibitions on topics relevant to the period and organizes guided tours and lectures.
