Mori Ōgai Memorial Center

The Mori Ōgai Memorial Center offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the life and work of the Japanese physician, writer, translator and critic.

The Mori Ōgai Memorial Center is dedicated to the Japanese physician, scientist, writer and translator Mori Ōgai (1862–1922), who studied at Robert Koch’s Institute of Hygiene in Berlin in 1887–88. Building on Mori’s contributions to the dissemination of German culture, literature, and medicine in Japan, the memorial center carries out scholarly work and focuses primarily on translation. In addition, these topics are explored and communicated through scholarly projects, exhibitions, publications and events.

Permanent exhibition at the Mori Ōgai Memorial Center

The memorial was founded in 1984 at Humboldt University in Berlin. It is located at the site of Mori's first residence in Berlin, on the first floor of Luisenstraße 39. The permanent exhibition offers in-depth insights into Mori's life and the historical context in which he lived. A particular highlight is the Ōgai Memorial Room, which brings to life the atmosphere of Mori Ôgai’s study trips.
