The Berlin Show

The Berlin Show: Helmut Newton Stiftung

Helmut Newton, Grunewaldsee, Berlin 1996

A tribute to Helmut Newton's hometown, "The Berlin Show" features Newton's iconic and many unknown images of Berlin as well as photographs of his early sources of inspiration.

The Helmut Newton Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary in June 2024 with this group exhibition, which is also a tribute to Newton's hometown. In the fall of 2003, the photographer decided to transfer parts of his archive to Berlin by first establishing the foundation named after him, which was housed in the former Landwehrkasino at Zoologischer Garten train station. From that station, Newton, who as a Jew in Nazi Germany was constantly threatened with deportation, left Berlin in a hurry in December 1938 and returned 65 years later as a world-famous photographer.

Newton Trained as a Photographer in Charlottenburg

Since 2003, the Helmut Newton Foundation has occupied the historic Landwehrkasino building together with the Art Library under the name Museum of Photography. Since 2021, the complete works of Helmut Newton and Alice Springs as well as all archival materials have been housed in the foundation's archive. From 1936 to 1938, Newton trained as a photographer in Berlin-Charlottenburg with the legendary photographer Yva, in whose footsteps he followed in his later work in the three genres of fashion, portrait and nude. In addition to Newton's iconic photos and many unknown Berlin images, the exhibition "The Berlin Show" also features photographs of his early sources of inspiration.
