The Haus der Statistik (House of Statistics) was built between 1968 and 1970 near Alexanderplatz and served as the headquarters of the GDR's Central Administration for Statistics.

Since January 1, 1970, the central state body for official statistics of the GDR had its headquarters in the building near Alexanderplatz. The three-part building was constructed as a reinforced concrete skeleton according to the plans of architects Manfred Hörner, Peter Senf and Joachim Härter.

After reunification: First Statistical Office, then vacant

In the conference room of the building was the mural "In Praise of Communism" by Ronald Paris. The large-format, two-meter-high and eleven-meter-long mural was moved to the DDR Museum in 2010 and can be viewed there today.

After reunification, the Haus der Statistik building was temporarily used as a branch office of the Federal Statistical Office and as the Berlin office of the Federal Commissioner for Stasi Records. The complex, which is currently being renovated, has been empty since 2008.

Future of the Haus der Statistik

For a long time, the House of Statistics building was supposed to be demolished in favor of a new building, but now there are plans to renovate and repurpose it. In recent years, the building has developed into a quarter for art, culture, education, administration, social affairs and affordable housing.
