An overview of Berlin's most popular parks and gardens with address, photos, public transport details and more
The Great Tropical Greenhouse is located in the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and is impressive not only because of its size.
The Great Tropical Greenhouse (German: Großes Tropenhaus) in the Botanical Garden is one of the largest and most important greenhouses in the world. Some of the plants growing there are over 150 years old.
The Great Tropical Greenhouse was built between 1905 and 1907 based on designs by Royal Building Officer Alfred Koerner. The imposing dome structure made of steel and glass does not require any supports. With a length of 60 meters, a width of 29 meters, and a height of 25 meters, it is one of the largest greenhouses in the world. After its destruction in the fall of 1943, the landmark of the Botanical Garden was rebuilt in the 1960s. Today, it is a listed building. The greenhouse underwent extensive renovation between 2006 and 2009 to preserve the historic structure and reduce energy consumption by 50 percent.
Visitors to the Tropenhaus can immerse themselves in a tropical climate all year round. The left side is dedicated to the American tropics, while the right side features plants representing the flora of the tropics of Africa, Asia, and Australia. The plant world is laid out like a map. A guidance and information system provides interesting facts about the plants and their significance. Huge palms and ferns thrive in the warm, humid climate of the tropical greenhouse; aerial roots and lianas hang from the glass dome. Visitors can discover the largest flowers in the plant kingdom and grass with stalks reaching 15 centimeters in diameter and 26 meters in height.
