Sophienstraße near the Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station has a distinct small-town charm reminiscent of Prague alleyways.
Sophienstraße in the Spandauer Altstadt district is one of the most beautiful streets in Berlin-Mitte. Numerous buildings from the 18th century have been preserved in Sophienstraße, giving it the charm of a small town. It was named after Queen Sophie Luise, the third wife of Frederick I. From the very beginning, the street was home to craftsmen: First basket weavers, umbrella makers and cab drivers, later goldsmiths, woodcarvers and pewterers. Today, the street and the area around it are still alive with small stores, galleries and cafés.
The Sophienkirche adds to the charm of the street. The sandstone church has the only remaining baroque church tower in Berlin. The church suffered little damage during the Second World War and was quickly used again for church services and Christian celebrations.
From Sophienstraße, you can reach the Hackesche Höfe and the Sophie-Gips-Höfe, two well-known courtyard complexes in Mitte. The Hackesche Höfe are a historic ensemble of buildings with art nouveau facades and offer a mix of stores, culture and nightlife. The Sophie-Gips-Höfe consist of two courtyards with an artistic design. Visitors will find galleries and a café here.
