The Wasserstadt Stralau was created as a project for the Expo at the turn of the millennium. Since then, a large residential area has been built on the Stralau peninsula.

The Wasserstadt Stralau is one of several Berlin projects that were launched on the occasion of EXPO 2000. The motto was “the new Berlin in the making.” The Stralau peninsula, which used to be heavily industrialized, was converted into the "Wasserstadt Stralau" (Water City Stralau).

Spacious residential complexes with 5,000 apartments have been built, as well as 500,000 square meters of office and commercial space, several schools, and daycare centers. As a result, Friedrichshain has gained a new, attractive residential area surrounded by parks and promenades, offering a high quality of inner-city living on the Rummelsburger Bucht and the Spree.
