Prenzlauer Berg
A paradise for families, a playground for hipsters and trendsetters, or just a cozy residential area? Prenzlauer Berg is all that and so much more. more
With its six courtyards and imposing red brick buildings, the Kulturbrauerei in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg is not only an industrial and architectural monument from the 19th century, but also a versatile event location and home to numerous cultural institutions.
The Kulturbrauerei is one of the few industrial architectural monuments in Berlin. On the 25,000 m² site dating from the 19th century, there are over 20 buildings in six courtyards. Where the Schultheiß brewery (1853-1967) used to brew its beer, a multicultural center was created after the fall of the Berlin Wall, which has developed into one of Berlin's largest alternative cultural institutions.
During the renovation of the building ensemble, care was taken to maintain and preserve the area designed by Franz Heinrich Schwechten and the facades were largely retained. Historic and modern architecture were combined. The use of the individual buildings can still be seen today in the original lettering on the houses.
A wide variety of events and tenants have found their home in the Kulturbrauerei: Theater, gastronomy, a cinema, exhibitions, concerts, workshops, readings and discussion series, parties, events for children - the site is used by commercial and non-commercial tenants. The Museum in der Kulturbrauerei shows the permanent exhibition "Everyday life in the GDR". Some rooms, such as the Kesselhaus, are regularly used as locations for television programs or as backdrops for film productions.
