Ministry of Economics announces renewed application freeze

After a hiatus of two months at the end of 2022, the Ministry of Economics announced a renewed application freeze due to an even higher demand for federal funding since the beginning of 2023.

According to the Ministry, the funding for 2023 and 2024 is already almost exhausted – despite the increase from €50 million to €70 million in funding. All potential savings have been taken into account. The applications submitted up to that point will continue to be processed and are subject to the availability of funds.

The industry association game is sounding the alarm, calling for a short-term increase in funding from €70 million to €125 million for 2023. For a long-term solution, Felix Falk, executive director of game, calls for a transition to a “fiscal games subsidy,” as it is already common practice in other countries such as the U.K., France and Canada.
