Indie Success: Thronefall Crosses Million-Copy Mark

Berlin-based indie developer Grizzly Games has achieved a remarkable milestone with their medieval strategy game Thronefall.

Thronefall has been selling over one million copies since its Early Access launch in August 2023, as reported by Games Wirtschaft.

The small studio, consisting of Paul Schnepf and Jonas Tyroller, has struck gold with their unique take on the tower defense genre. Priced at €12.99 across PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch, Thronefall has garnered “overwhelmingly positive” reviews from nearly 19,000 Steam users.

The game’s success lies in its innovative blend of kingdom management and defense mechanics. Players spend their days building their medieval realm, constructing windmills and smithies for economic growth, while defending against increasingly challenging attacks at night using walls, towers, knights, and archers.

On February 4, 2025, the team released their final update, marking the end of Thronefall’s development journey. The update introduces twelve mini-modes, a highly requested endless mode, and a siege mode, along with quality-of-life improvements and additional language support.

Thronefall’s achievement adds to Berlin’s flourishing indie game scene, which has produced other beloved titles like Dorfromantik and Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders. The game’s success is particularly notable given that it was developed by just two people, proving that small teams can make a big impact in the gaming industry.
